Wang Lihong's Speech at the University of Oxford (Chinese-English Version)

Respected faculty members, students, and guests, good day!

It is an honor for me to stand here today and exchange ideas with scholars and young people from all over the world. As a musician, I have always believed that art is the bridge that crosses language and culture. Today, I hope to share with you some thoughts on culture, growth, and dreams through my own experiences.

First of all, I would like to say that I am not a traditional "scholar." I studied music, not philosophy or history. But it was this love for music that led me down a different path. I grew up in the United States, and my parents are both Chinese. They hoped I would inherit Chinese culture, but they also encouraged me to explore the world. This made me deeply interested in the integration of two cultures from an early age.

I received my education in the U.S. and studied music in New York. Later, I began to try incorporating elements of traditional Chinese culture into modern music, such as Peking Opera singing styles, the atmosphere of classical Chinese poetry, and even the use of traditional Chinese instruments. This process was not easy, but I have always believed that culture is not static; it needs to be reinterpreted to shine in a new era.

Coming to the University of Oxford has been a very special experience in my life. The academic atmosphere here has greatly inspired me and made me more aware of how important dialogue between cultures is. We often talk about "globalization," but true globalization is not just economic integration—it is the exchange and understanding of ideas.

In conclusion, I would like to share a sentence: "Culture is the root, art is the branch, and dreams are the flowers." I hope each of us can find our roots, dare to express ourselves, and at the same time, embrace an open mind to appreciate and understand different cultures. Only in this way can we truly achieve harmony and coexistence in the world.

Thank you, everyone!
